Been there, done that, messed around
I'm having fun don't put me down,
"What do you mean sold out?"
"I mean that we just sold our last one. I'm sure by next week will have more in stock ma'am." Abbey said, quiet grateful that the witch was following her and could not see her eye roll.
"Well surely there must be some in the back?"
"Ma'am, I can promise you that there aren't any in the back. I took inventory myself." She looked down at the list of books an eleven year old had given her. Typical days always involved taking on two customers at once. At least the eleven year old had gone the safe route and handed Abbey the paper, not follow her around asking if a popular book that was in demand was still on the shelves. It was a Friday afternoon, did the lady really expect to find "Who Am I? Part II" by Gilderoy Lockhart. Really though? Lockhart? He was rumored to be the biggest fake of all fakes in the land of fakes! Why people listened to something someone like him said was beyond her. His daughter was in her last year at Hogwarts, and Abbey prayed that the girl moved to some unknown land where she never had to hear another word out the kid's mouth.
"Well, you must have miscounted, surely this place gets more books than-"
"Ma'am!" Abbey whipped around and gave the lady a serious look, "I took stock just a minute before you started bombarding me with questions about Lockhart's newest book. Did you even know that it was discovered how much of a fake he was? His 'Who Am I? Part II is strangely popular and I'm praying to God that it's because people want to read about how much of a fraud he is. We've had plenty through out the week, but others came in the last four days and bought their copy of it while it was still on the shelves. Now," Abbey pulled down The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection for the eleven year old, "if you come back next week before Friday, I'm sure you'll be lucky to find a copy for yourself."
"Well! It's clear this store is losing it's inviting air!" The woman stated before turning on her heel and leaving the store. "No, it's just losing it's tolerance for idiots," Abbey muttered under her breath.
Abbey let the DADA book float up and follow her around as she searched the store for the other books the first year needed. The poor thing probably ran off traumatized by how Abbey attacked her other customer. One day though she--the girl--would understand that not everyone in the world was able to comprehend when a book was sold out. A History of Magic by Bathilda Bagshot, that was next on the list. Abbey remembered exactly where that book was. She had managed to get her father to take her to Florish & Blotts for her first year. She had even managed to get him to help her find the books and clearly remembered that he had to grab and reach it--you know, since she had always been a short kid.
It was no surprise to find that she still could not reach up and grab the book. Her luck? The only ladder was currently under the feet of one of her co-workers. She craned her neck to look up at the book's binding. She could jump and attempt to reach it, but she was only 5 feet tall and the book had to be 7 feet up or close to...well at least to Abbey it was.
I'll never let you sweep me off my feet,
I won't let you in again, the messages I've tried to send
